Another place we can look to for inspiration is astronomy. This is an analemma (thanks to Cassidy Curtis for telling me what this is); it shows the position of the sun at the same time every day over the course of a year. It's often found on older globes, and it brings home to me this idea that the sun is never just the sun; it's today's sun, and the day is never just the day.

This is the kind of device that ocean navigators use alot. They're are among the people who are really comfortable with the idea of landscapes changing underneath them (see Mark Monmonier's "Coast Lines" for a study of the subject); I I think we can learn alot from them as we map rapidly changing spaces like the ones I've shown so far.
